Vik Muniz’s “Wasteland” gets a World Bank Response

December 10, 2010

A few months ago I saw Vik’s new movie, Wasteland, which documents his experience in Jardiim Gramacho. Go see it, it’s great. You get attached to the picadores in the film who work to separate out recyclable materials from the trash in one of South America’s largest garbage dumps. The dump is closing this year and the film leaves you wondering what will really happen to these people whose survival depends on the garbage.

In doing research for a paper on the Brazilian education system, I just came across this World Bank notice pledging $50 million to help with Brazil’s solid waste management. Very cool.

    Congratulations Brooke!
O filme vale a pena ser visto!
Vik conseguiu um grande olhar sobre o problema, talvez agora, apareça uma solução.
You saw it first. Love you
