Dealing in Gray

November 1, 2009

We just had dinner with Ethan Bronner, the Jerusalem Bureau Chief for the New York Times.  He was super impressive, an engaging speaker with good stories, and such a nuanced perspective of the situation here.  He spoke in terms of dealing in shades of gray when it comes to the conflict.  At every turn Israelis and Palestinians think the opposite thing, believe the opposite thing, have different names for each component (the Palestinians say wall, Israelis use the less aggressive, more neighborly fence, and the New York Times uses the neutral barrier.) I think his balanced view, his honest appreciation of each detail, of separating fact from rumor from belief as an American Jew is extremely admirable.
