The High Dive

October 13, 2009

Last night we (Scott, Gui, Gui’s friend from Riverdale John, and his friend who also lives here Creighton) were talking about trying to figure out what to do with our lives.  Gui, who’s an amazing athlete and has played soccer left, right and center in college and all over the world, isn’t very good at swimming.  Apparently he can barely stay head above water.  So it was funny when he said, “I think figuring out what you want to do with your life is like swimming, you gotta just jump into the pool.”

He’s right of course.  I like this metaphor.  I realize now that I’ve been walking around the deck trying to figure out the best way to get in, standing on the top step for a while, testing out the ladder, sitting on the edge with my toes skimming the surface.  It’s time to just climb up to the diving board and jump. What’s the worst that can happen? Bellyflop?
