Can Collectors

July 27, 2009

I forgot to mention Rocinha’s recycling system when I wrote about the favela a few weeks ago. As they function as fairly complete cities embedded within Rio, they have created their own recycling systems.  I’m not exactly sure how it works, but wandering around there are store fronts filled with sacks of crushed cans. I think this bounty is turned into raw aluminum–or whatever recycled cans are crumpled and turned into.  The flont side of this is that at any gathering–on any night in Lapa, along the beaches, at the Jazz Fest on Saturday–favela residents wander through the crowds and pick up empty cans.  For all of the favela projects, it’s sort of interesting that this kind of recycling is already occurring and came about totally organically– it’s a way for people to make some money.
